Lenses and Photography Vocabulary

I would use a telephoto lens to take a picture of an animal.

I would use a prime lens when cropping a photo.

I would use a wide-angle lens to take a picture of the landscape.

Depth of Field (shallow and wide)-
  • Shallow depth of field is when you blur the background and keeping the main subject sharp. This helps because your eye will look at the subject and not the background
  • Wide depth of field
Light (angle and intensity)-
Shadows Diffusion-
The use of Shadows in your photo to make your photo's have a more soften up the photo.
Exposure-This is how the camera adjusts the shutter speed and aperture to ensure the right amount of light reaches the film or CCD.
Aperture (f-stop)-A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. The size of the aperture is measured in F-stop. This is good because if your in a darker room you can brighten up the photo by turning down the f-stop letting more light in.
Shutter speed-Is the unit of measurement which determines how long shutter remains open as the picture is taken. The slower the shutter speed, the longer the exposure time. The shutter speed and aperture together control the total amount of light reaching the sensor. This is good because
ISO-Measures the sensitivity of the image sensor.

Front Pages of the World

What is your favorite newspaper front page? Why?

 El Paso Times

What is your favorite headline from that newspaper? Why are you interested in it?

 A town in shock
This interests me because if i didn't already know what happened I would want to know what was so big that the whole town was affected by it.

How many stories are on the front page of your favorite?

 Two

What do you notice that all newspaper front pages have in common?

They all have a different but cool font for their name. They some have coupons towards the bottom. Some have the weather on top. The writing is in columns.  They all have a main big picture either on top or middle of the page.

What are things that vary (or are different) on the front pages of different newspapers?

Some newspapers have more than one big picture. The amount of stories in the articles on the page. Some headlines have headlines. the stories are different as well.

Magazine part 2

Early magazine covers-The magazine covers in this time look nothing like what you would find today. The cover was mainly used for the title and table of contents. They didn't have anything on the cover explaining what was inside of the magazine.

The poster cover-These magazines might as well have been a poster since it was so big. The cover didn't give away what was inside. Sometimes the pictures that were on the cover really didn't relate to what the magazine was about.

Pictures Married to Type-These magazine covers started to use more cover lines. People use these covers to help the reader be more interested in reading the magazine. The cover lines also inform you more about what the magazine was about, who took the pictures, and who helped make the cover/magazine.

In the Forest of Words-These magazines cover lines were just as important than cover art was. Sometimes more because the model would be covered up more with words. The words were printed across the bodies of the models. In time the number of cover lines on a cover have increased to tell the buyer on what the magazine will be about. The cover lines are sometimes bigger than the actual names of the magazine itself.

      5 web sites

On this website all of the pictures were a landscape picture. To me the photos look like they were taken either early morning or sunset. I think that because in multiple photos they had the moon it and the moon isn't out during the day. The photos I most liked was the one that had water in them because the water made a cool fog-like effect.

I learned that black and white photos make the picture look more mysterious, because there is nothing distracting the viewer to just one part of the photo.

      My favorite photo.
I choose this photo because I love how the water looks.  Everything looks so mysterious.

I see rule of thirds. avoid mergers

      Storms

On this website I loved how most of the pictures were in a pretty location and then you see this storm coming. It looks like something bad is going to happen. I especially loved the lighting pictures. I have always thought lighting was "shocking"

      My favorite photo.
I choose this photo because its a calm day with this storm on the way. Like a beautiful day about to go bad

      I see depth of fields

      Magazine Cover Introduction:Blog #1

1.Arousing curiosity (that’s to pull the casual glancer in)
2.Never trim a printout, mount it beautifully,
3.print out all the alternates as hard copy, trim them accurately to magazine size and glue them onto old issues
      4. Dont judge on screen It lacks scale because it is isolated in its own magic electronic world, so you have nothing real to compare it to. You can only guess at type sizes and hope they’re OK.
      5. Also The screen is the wrong size, no matter how big it is. You can’t see it intimately as if it were in your hands.
